What Size Will My Cross Stitch Be? Aida Count Explained
Every pattern lists its size in stitches, for example 82 x 83 stitches. How big that turns out on your wall depends on the fabric you stitch it on. Here is the simple math, so you can pick the right fabric and frame before you start.
What “count” means
Aida fabric is woven in little squares, and each square holds one cross stitch. The count is how many squares fit in one inch:
- 14 count: 14 stitches per inch. Bigger squares, easiest to see. The best choice for beginners.
- 16 count: a little smaller and finer.
- 18 count: small and detailed.
- 22 count: very fine, usually for experienced stitchers or tiny ornaments.
The higher the count, the smaller your finished piece.
The formula
Stitches ÷ fabric count = size in inches
Do it once for the width and once for the height. For a design of 82 x 83 stitches:
| Fabric | Width | Height |
|---|---|---|
| 14 count | 82 ÷ 14 = 5.9 in | 83 ÷ 14 = 5.9 in |
| 16 count | 82 ÷ 16 = 5.1 in | 83 ÷ 16 = 5.2 in |
| 18 count | 82 ÷ 18 = 4.6 in | 83 ÷ 18 = 4.6 in |
| 22 count | 82 ÷ 22 = 3.7 in | 83 ÷ 22 = 3.8 in |
Multiply inches by 2.54 if you prefer centimeters.
You don’t always have to do this yourself: our Etsy listings show a Finished dimensions table for 14, 16, 18 and 22 count.
How much fabric to buy
Add a border around the design so you have room for a hoop and for framing. A good rule is 3 inches (about 8 cm) on every side, so 6 inches extra in each direction.
For the 82 x 83 design on 14 count: 5.9 + 6 = about 12 x 12 inches of fabric.
If you plan to frame it in a standard frame, pick the frame first and make sure your fabric is at least 2 inches bigger than the frame opening on every side.
How many strands of floss?
DMC embroidery floss comes as 6 thin strands twisted together. You separate them and stitch with only a few:
- 14 and 16 count: 2 strands for crosses, 1 for backstitch.
- 18 count: 1 or 2 strands (2 gives fuller coverage, 1 looks lighter).
- 22 count: 1 strand.
Quick checklist before you start
- Find the stitch count in the pattern.
- Divide by your fabric count to get the finished size.
- Add 6 inches to each side measurement for your fabric piece.
- Choose your strands based on the fabric count.
Now you’re ready to stitch. The patterns below all list their sizes for every fabric count, so you can pick one that fits your frame.
